Hon. Colonial Secretary,
RECP
Rec 19 SEP 10.
I should think the best thing to do would
be to apply to Lieut.Col. Prain, Director, Royal Gardens, Kew, for a man with a practical knowledge of Forestry and Horticul- -ture. I do not think that there would be any difficulty in getting a suitable man in this way. Most men who are trained in gardening have some knowledge of Forestry, and, however eminent a man may be as a Forester, his knowledge would be of little value until he had had several years' local experience. I should like to see the post offered to Mr. 3. H. Wilson who has had about 10 years' experience collecting living plants and seeds for Messrs. J. H. Veitch and Sons, London, and latterly for the Harvard University. Mr. Wilson, who is about 33 years of age, is a practical man, trained at Kew, and the most successful collector of living plants and seeds that has ever been in the Fast. He has travelled throgh China on three or four occasions and has a vast knowledge of the economic vegetable products of the country. Whether Mr. Wilson would accept the post I do not know, but this could be ascertained by cable to
Harvard or Kew.
